About this build

This MOC has been verified as buildable by its designer.

The model is 21.0 cm wide, 28.5 cm long, 10.4 cm tall Or 8.3 inches wide, 11.2 inches long, 4.1 inches tall

After finishing my Z-95 Headhunter, I started thinking about other starfighters that could benefit from the elongated nose design of the X-Wing. The Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica immediately came to mind. While it never appeared in blue on screen, I felt it was still possible to capture the spirit of the Viper by blending design cues from both universes.

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the nose. It’s not quite right for a Viper and I did experiment with changing it, but LEGO absolutely nailed the tapered hexagonal shaping here. Every alternative I tried ended up clashing with the overall design language, especially given the surprisingly limited palette of set 75460.

Instead, I focused on the signature triple engine layout. The X-Wing’s round elements form the two side thrusters, while a wheel piece makes up the central thruster. Curved bricks are used throughout, with a 4×4 curved slope shaping the cooling intake behind the cockpit. A small brick-built stabilisation fin completes the classic three-pointed silhouette, though I definitely wouldn’t mind a few more white or blue parts.

The anhedral wings are built using large wedge plates and 1×10 plates. While not perfectly screen accurate, I leaned into a double-delta shape that felt right visually. The side engines are mounted to the wings using pin hole plates and axle bricks, with the downward angle locked in by the top engine mount. Each wingtip carries a laser cannon, secured with curved slopes.

For playability, the Viper features retractable front landing gear and a built-in ventral stand at the rear. The model is rock solid and can be handled confidently, whether by the fuselage or even the wings, though grabbing it from underneath is still the best way when swooshing it around making pew pew sounds.

I included a female pilot, Colonel Ward, as a subtle nod to Starbuck, portrayed by Katee Sackhoff, who also plays Bo-Katan in Star Wars.

While this isn’t technically a Star Wars starfighter, I think the Colonial Viper has a lot of crossover appeal. Many of us grew up watching Battlestar Galactica, and at the end of the day, the Viper is just a seriously cool fighter.

So say we all!
