About this build

The Shimakaze (島風, „Island Wind“) was an experimental destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II and the only ship of her class ever completed. Designed as the lead ship of a new „Type C“ destroyer series, she was built to be faster and more powerfully armed than any other destroyer of her time. Laid down in 1941 and commissioned in May 1943, Shimakaze became legendary for her extreme performance. She reached an incredible 40.9 knots during trials — making her one of the fastest destroyers in the world. Her massive powerplant delivered over 79,000 shaft horsepower, and she was the only destroyer in naval history armed with 15 torpedo tubes (three quintuple launchers), all capable of firing the feared Type 93 „Long Lance“ torpedoes. This combination of unmatched speed and overwhelming torpedo firepower made her a nightmare on paper for any enemy fleet. Although her combat career was relatively short, she participated in important operations in the Philippines. On 11 November 1944, she was sunk by American carrier aircraft during the Battle of Ormoc Bay. This model shows the Shimakaze as detailed as possible and contains movable elements such as the torpedo launchers, gun turrets.
