About this build

This MOC has been verified as buildable by its designer.

The 60511 vintage steam train is full of nice design ideas and details. However, frankly, it is almost comically small. My aim was to make the train bigger, while preserving the design ideas and details of the original. I only improved certain details when I thought the original was built in an unsatisfactory manner.

Please note that this model is only affordable if you already own set 60511 (details below). Ask for my very similar version with a black locomotive if you don't own that set.

What was changed?

The locomotive was upgraded from a 0-6-0 to a 4-6-2 wheel configuration. The leading and trailing bogies pivot to allow the locomotive to drive on standard R40 track. The boiler, fire box and cabin were extended in proportion. It looks a bit like a tank engine as a result (4-6-2T, with a coal tender). The boiler has an additional dome behind the chimney. Fire box and cabin were raised by one plate, the former because it is a plate too low in the original, the latter to match the passenger cars. The fire box has two domes instead of one, and both domes are now properly on top of the fire box instead of stuck into a square hole. The whistle now is topped by a cone. The interior of the cabin remained the same.

The tender has been made 3 studs longer and a plate higher to scale better with the larger locomotive. An additional benefit of the enlargement of the tender is that the (optional) Powered Up hub and the cable to the train motor fit much better inside.

The train has been upgraded from a single passenger car to two passenger cars, matching the typical configuration of a LEGO City train. Each passenger car has been extended from 4 windows on each side to 8 windows on each side. The cars now have proper bogies instead of fixed axles. They are one plate higher as a result. The design of the interior with the (rather odd) chairs, coffee pot and cookies has been preserved.

The station has also been enlarged, to allow a passenger car to be entirely next to the platform. There are three benches, two lanterns and a few new fences.

Sticker sheet

The download includes a sticker sheet that you can print to get the look of the original train, also on the additional passenger car, or on both cars and the locomotive if you don't own set 60511.

Which parts are required?

The Inventory listed here on Rebrickable is complete -- i.e. you don't need to have set 60511 to build the entire train if you buy the parts listed. It is for an unmotorized version. The download also includes a complete parts list for a motorized version (Powered Up). At the time of writing (July 2026), set 60511 introduced a number of parts in new colours, making those very expensive to obtain in real LEGO when you don't have that set. As mentioned above, I made a slightly different, more affordable version of my MOC for people that don't have set 60511. You can find it here.

For owners of set 60511, I have added to the downloads the parts list for just the additional parts required (for an unmotorized train) in Rebrickable CSV, Bricklink XML, and Brickstore BSX format.

Note that minifigures and accessories (e.g. a train ticket and a serving tray) are not included in the parts lists, but they of course match the train perfectly

Hi! I'm Steven. I'm a nerd, husband, and father to a son who is obsessed with public transport. I started developing brick models for him when he was 5 and got a little sister. I am still having a great time with developing brick models, most prominently of trains, trams, metros and buses.
